IN DELIVERING THE EXHIBITION AND LEARNING ARMS OF TANNERY ARTS' PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMME, DRAWING ROOM explores ideas around contemporary drawing and makes them visible in the public domain. As the only public gallery in the UK, and indeed Europe, dedicated to the investigation and support of contemporary drawing practice, Drawing Room provides a unique resource for the promotion of drawing, its practice, theory and methodology. It provides opportunities for emerging and established artists, across nationalities, generations and cultures, to develop their practice. The programme incorporates a wide range of ideas from the traditional to the experimental, and is triggered by an awareness of artists' practice. It supports the production of new work, acting as a catalyst to test the parameters of drawing.
DRAWING ROOM attracts a wide audience including art professionals, students and the general public interested in advances in contemporary art. Its specialism informs a Learning Programme that is conceived both to contribute to theoretical discourses on the medium of drawing and to widen audiences for its manifestations. Drawing Room collaborates with individuals and institutions, nationally and internationally, to increase the scope and ambition of projects and to disseminate its work.
DRAWING ROOM is a non-profit making organization, initiated in 2000. It is programmed and managed by its co-founders and Directors, Mary Doyle, Kate Macfarlane and Katharine Stout, who have over twenty years experience of working in the arts. The gallery has no core funding and supports itself through earned income, sponsorship, individual giving and grants from public bodies.
DRAWING ROOM's work is disseminated through an In-Conversation programme, Drawing Pad projects, publications and touring exhibitions to regional museums and galleries in the UK. The Drawing Room also collaborates on exhibitions and projects with organisations here and abroad.
DRAWING ROOM is the only London based non-academic partner of The International Centre for Fine Art Research, University of the Arts, a high profile network of museums, galleries and academic institutions in Europe and America.
The gallery is located in an attractive and spacious warehouse in BErmondsey, south east London. Being housed in Tannery Arts readily offers opportunites for dialogue and exchange with Tannery's professional artists.
Please note that the gallery is only open to the public during exhibitions. DRAWING ROOM presents three to four exhibitions a year, which run for six weeks during which time the gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday 12.00-18.00, or by appointment.
Please see EXHIBITIONS section for current programme.
